We have created the breakthrough in mastering change and shortening transition, finally overcoming the frustrating issue of the delayed reaction between choice, decision, and action in change. We have disassembled the human factor in change and made it understandable and a process. Now, for the first time, human change can be planned, monitored and encouraged in both corporate and personal dimensions.
Change is an inevitable part of life. Yet, despite its constant presence, many of us find it challenging to navigate. In the “Back on Track Project,” I embarked on a journey to understand why change is so difficult and to develop a process that makes it more manageable. The result is a seven-step approach to mastering change holistically, ensuring that when change happens—and it will—you’re prepared.
Why the Challenge in Human Change?
When you’re good at change, you’re good at life. This is the premise of the Back on Track Project, which seeks to answer why change, though ubiquitous, is so challenging for most people. Change is the most common experience in our lives. The world evolves, jobs evolve, we age, relationships shift—everything changes. Despite this, the science of change remains underdeveloped, leading many to struggle, lose balance, and get stuck in a cycle of trying to fix one thing only to see another fall apart.
Change is particularly complex in the context of business. External factors like market conditions, management decisions, competition, and even colleagues can impose changes that aren’t within your control. The result is often a disconnect between where you are and where others are, making it crucial to stay in sync with the world around you.
The Universal Need for Change
Change is not just a personal challenge; it’s a global one. Whether it’s wars, environmental impacts, or policy shifts, change is at the heart of the world’s most pressing issues. Change is required even in moments of celebration, such as the reduction of greenhouse emissions. It demands a shift in policies, lifestyles, and mindsets.
Having faced significant changes in my own life—multiple marriages, career shifts, health challenges, including four spinal surgeries—I know firsthand the importance of adapting. Change is more than just altering your goals, vision, or beliefs. It’s about embracing wisdom. Wisdom, I believe, is synonymous with change.
The Danger of Specialisation
Reflecting on my life and the changes I’ve undergone, I realised it’s easy to become overly focused on one area of life—relationships, career, or health—while neglecting others. This lack of balance can lead to problems in the neglected areas, creating a vicious cycle of unresolved issues.
Seeking help often leads to specialised advice, but over-specialisation is dangerous. As nature shows us, over-specialisation can lead to extinction. Focusing solely on your career, spiritual life, or any single area while ignoring others is not sustainable. You must care about all aspects of your life—your health, relationships, social life, finances, and more—because any of them can potentially disrupt your entire existence.
The Holistic Approach to Change
Change cannot be compartmentalised. It’s not something that can be left to happen organically. When change occurs, it often brings with it fear, guilt, worry, and anxiety—not just for you, but for those around you. Managing change holistically is crucial, and it begins with wisdom.
1. Balance Your Mind
The first step in mastering change is balancing your mind. Emotional frustration is a sign that your mind is out of balance. Emotions are lopsided thoughts, and nature seeks balance in all things. By balancing your mind, you can think clearly and rationally, which is essential for adapting to change.
2. Challenge Your Body
Your physical body is a repository of memory. Whether you’re a “big fat bundle of memory” or a “skinny fat bundle of memory,” your body holds onto past experiences. Regular exercise, proper nutrition, and maintaining flexibility are vital. They help your body let go of past disappointments and fears, allowing you to move forward into the future with vitality.
3. Connect to Your Heart
Connecting to your heart isn’t about getting emotional. It’s about creating an environment that opens your heart to the future. If your surroundings are cold, cluttered with memories of the past, or uninspiring, it’s hard to keep your heart open. A bright future requires an open heart, which means ensuring your physical and emotional environment supports your aspirations.
4. Ground Yourself
Grounding yourself is about stability, and this comes from prioritising your tasks and focusing on what’s most important. Working on low priorities can lead to self-sabotage and attract negative circumstances. Focusing on your highest priorities builds self-worth and ensures you’re grounded in what truly matters.
5. Inspire Your Dreams
Your imagination is a powerful tool for seeing the future. If fear from past disappointments is blocking your imagination, you need to change the narrative of those past events. Free yourself from the fear of repeating past mistakes, and let your imagination inspire your dreams for the future.
6. Speak Your Truth
Self-talk is critical in the process of change. How you speak to yourself—what you believe about yourself—profoundly impacts your ability to change. Positive self-talk encourages growth and helps you stay true to your goals and aspirations.
7. Expand Your Influence
Ultimately, the success of change is measured by your ability to influence others positively. Change is not just about personal satisfaction but how you affect the world around you. Positive change grows your influence, which is the true success measure.
Embracing Holistic Change
The Back on Track Project is built on the belief that these seven steps—balance your mind, challenge your body, connect to your heart, ground yourself, inspire your dreams, speak your truth, and expand your influence—are essential to mastering change. By applying them daily, you can proactively manage change in your life rather than waiting for external forces to push you into it.
In conclusion, holistic change can be mastered daily, ensuring you stay on track, balanced, and grow. This is Chris Walker, encouraging you to embrace change and live a fulfilled life.
Bye for now.
